Butterfly Creek is the perfect destination for your education or tour group visit. We are located just one minute from Auckland Airport and have ample free parking.
Butterfly Creek is a great all-weather venue with most attractions being UNDER-COVER and easily accessed via our wheelchair friendly pathways and boardwalks.
Both our Butterfly House and Buttermilk Farm staff are happy to meet with and address your group. Please arrange for this in advance.
We offer a number of attractions and hospitality options allowing you to tailor your visit to your particular budget and time requirement.
Education
Classroom Curriculum Opportunities
Butterfly Creek provides real-life experiences for the Science Strand - Making Sense of the Living World. The Tropical Butterfly House, Pirates Below aquaria, Bugs About insects, Crocodile exhibit, Farmyard and the Working Wetlands provides great examples of practical technology in action.
Education Modules: Enquire about our educational package with modules for: Butterflies, Giant Weta (wetapunga), Tarantula, Crocodiles, Alligators and Wetlands.
Threaded right through our exhibits and around the wetlands is a raft of comprehensive educational signage points providing great detail and information on the various exhibits.
Why not also use your visit as a stimulus for the visual arts - create a wall mural or individual painting, construct a mobile or banner - what could be more visually stimulating and vibrant than the spectacular tropical butterflies, fishes and birds found at Butterfly Creek.
Experience The Tropical Butterfly House and Aquaria
Complete with not only amazing butterflies but also turtles, fishes and birds. Observe the delighted looks on your student`s faces whilst they explore Australasias finest tropical butterfly house with over 700 free-flying exotic butterflies from around the globe. The temperature controlled butterfly house immerses you in a tropical habitat complete with not only amazing butterflies but also turtles fish and birds.
Pirates Below: Your class will also enjoy New Zealand`s largest fresh water tropical fish aquarium and New Zealand`s largest tropical marine aquarium - complete with Nemo and Dory.
Opening in May 09 is "Crocodilia" featuring two giant salt water crocodiles - the largest predators in the country! New Zealand`s only baby alligators are here now and on display in the Butterfly House.
Bugs About hosts the largest collection of tarantula in NZ as well as Lily`s Cockroach House, live bee-hive, mantids, stick insects and a host of other bugs - including NZ`s largest insect, the giant wetapunga. Butterfly Creek is proud to be the home of the only captive rear and release programme for these endangered natives. (you`ll only see this mighty insect here at Butterfly Creek).
Other features include Buttermilk Farm interactive farmyard and Barn. The children are permitted to hold baby animals and are welcome to get up close with all the usual farmyard favourites.
Working Wetlands Take the opportunity to educate the children on
the vital role wetlands play in the New Zealand landscape. Butterfly
Creek is built over and around a working wetland. We have constructed extensive walkways and platforms around the wetlands and installed a range of interpretive signage points.
And of course there`s the Red Admiral Express Train which traverses
the wetlands and the further option of a Tractor Hay Ride around the
lake.
We offer a safe and secure environment. Our cafe courtyard / playground is fully fenced. Parents can sit back and relax in the child friendly Cafeor adjacent courtyard while the kids let off a bit of steam in Curly`s playground.
And all this is UNDER COVER so you can enjoy your visit no matter
what the weather.

The ideal venue and the perfect day out for your probus and rotary club, seniors group, retirement village, rest home - or any special interest group. Our venue is wheelchair friendly and is almost entirely under-cover. We offer some great new mid-week packages including real value for money refreshment options.
We are UNDERCOVER so don`t let the weather put you off.
The Tropical Butterfly House is temperature controlled at approximately 28 degrees Celcius, 365 days per year - the perfect all-weather attraction. Our butterfly house hosts over 700 brilliantly coloured free-flying tropical butterflies as well as fish, turtles and birds.
The aquaria room houses New Zealand`s largest tropical fresh-water tank and a highly impressive tropical marine tank - complete with brilliantly coloured fishes and coral - as well as a large sea horse tank and a static exhibit of weird and wonderful insects from around the world. Built over and around a working wetland, Butterfly Creek is set in 5.5 acres of picturesque landscape and also includes Buttermilk Farm interactive farmyard and The Red Admiral ExpressTrain - which circulates twice around the wetland, over two bridges and through a tunnel.
Flutterbuys Gift Shop offers a lovely range of very affordable gifts and Papillon Cafe offers a great range of dining options able to be enjoyed either inside the cafe or on the adjacent deck or the enclosed court-yard garden.
